Many people believe they must go back to a car dealership for New Car Log Book servicing in order to maintain the warranty. Actually, the ACCC have consistently confirmed that under Australian Law, you are free to have your car service carried out by a mechanic or service centre of your choice provided they are qualified to do so. We all know being without your car is a big inconvenience. However, it has to happen at some point so it's better to bring it in for a regular service on your terms rather than having it break down at any old time.
Rattling, whirring, whining and other noises, odd smells, poor fuel economy or bad performance are all signs that something isn't right and if you just keep driving with the mindset of ‘I'll fix it later' the eventual damage and cost to fix it could be much greater than if you'd just had it looked at the first sign of trouble.
What is a Log Book Service?
Every time a new car rolls off the lot it
comes with a ‘Log Book.' This Log Book is basically the manufacturer's guide to
how often vehicle services should be procured. The Log Book also carefully goes
over what should be checked, what your car's diagnostic readings should be as
well as other important servicing guidelines which remain specific to your
Often there will be times with your car that you think you have diagnosed just from common sense and you will in fact wind up putting a bandage on a much larger issue.
Take, as an example, when your engine won't start. Or your car does start but it's taking a long time to "turn over." You might simply think that's a matter of your battery being dead. The simple solution may be to just replace the battery; done and done, right? You don't need a mechanic to replace a battery! However the simple answer isn't always the correct answer. Your battery may be fine; it could be your alternator which isn't charging your battery correctly. Even if you replace the battery, if your car still isn't working then you may need to bring it in to have it looked at and you may discover that the battery itself wasn't really "dead" at all!
Another case of the simple car service symptom trumping the larger car issue is when your car delivers a "clunk" or "squeak" noise when you catapult over a bump in the road. That's totally natural right? Maybe you've just got worn struts or shock absorbers? If you replace those then the issue is fixed, right? Well not always. Your noise while going over bumps could be related to your shocks or struts but this could also be something far more subtle like worn stabilizer bar end links or ball joints. It's no secret that one common symptom doesn't always mean one common problem. If you don't have a mechanic go in and look for these issues then you are doing your car, yourself, and that ailing car noise a disservice.
